Microsuction vs ear syringing (irrigation)
Irrigation flushes the ear with pressurised water — blind, with no view of what's happening inside. Microsuction gently lifts the wax out under direct vision, so we can see exactly what we're doing the whole time.
What we use
Microsuction
- Performed under direct vision — the ear is seen at all times
- No water, so no soaking, mess or towels
- Suitable for perforated eardrums, grommets and previous ear surgery

The older method
Water irrigation / syringing
- Done blind — the wax and canal can't be seen during the flush
- Higher risk of eardrum perforation from water pressure
- Can cause middle and outer ear infection (otitis externa)
- Linked to dizziness, vertigo, pain and, rarely, tinnitus or hearing loss
- Not safe with a perforation, grommets, or past ear surgery
Microsuction is now considered the safer, cleaner standard — and it's the only method we use. Many clinics have moved away from syringing for exactly these reasons.
